Can you change the way you file your taxes? l just got married and am still filling single can l change that to married? How does that work at the end of the year? What will l file then? Will l get more or less back? I've been going to change it to married so l get less taxes taken out but l wasnt sure if l had to wait till the end of the year or what?

If you want more money back you need to change the number of dependents you claim on your W-4 from 1 to 2. Also when filing your taxes it is better to file Married-Filing Jointly.

l am not sure what u mean by the question, but l will try to answer each for you.

1) You will file on a 1040 based form, depending on what works best for ur situation. Your return will be due on April 15th.

2) Yes, u can change ur W-4 withholding at any time. Just ask ur HR person for a form.

3) You will file with a married filing status (either married filing joint or married filing separate) at the end of the year, since ur filing status is determined by ur marital status on the last day of the year (December 31).

4) Without knowing ur entire situation, u should, in theory, get more back if u have been being withheld as a single individual.

5) At this point, it is late in the year, u could change it for more money for Christmas, but l would recommend just changing it January 1.

If u were married on 12/31 of the tax year, u need to file either Married Filing Joint or Married Filing Separate. (note: there r a few rare exceptions to this, separated couples, non-resident aliens, etc., that probably do not apply).

If u did not file that way & were married, u can do a 1040X amended return. If u want married filing joint, u & ur spouse need to do it together. You can change 1040x to a joint return, but if u filed a joint return, u cannot change it back to married filing separate.

Married filing joint has some tax advantages over separate (or even single), but it comes at the cost of having a joint liability (again, some exceptions, injured spouse & innocent spouse).

It makes no difference when you change your W-4. Your tax will be based on your actual tax return when you file. If you claim too many exemptions on your W-4, you will probably owe tax when you file. If you claim too few, you will be likely to get a refund.

You can change your W-4 any time during the year in order to increase or decrease your withholding.

If you just got married, unless your spouse dies between now and December31, you will be considered married for the whole year. You misstate the situation when you say you are still filing single. You may be having tax withheld as though you were single, but you do not file anything until 2009 then you will file as married filing jointly or separately, your choice. Then. You can change your W-4 now if you want.

You can leave ur W-4 as single if u want to, but u r required to file ur actual tax return as married, either a joint return or married filing separately. A joint return will almost always give u a lower tax total between you. There is no way to tell whether u will get more back total, or less - depends on too many things u do not say in ur question. That can go either way. Many people, but far from all, get more back. If u both have high incomes, u will probably get less back but not for sure.
