l am a college student and wanted to start building credit. l have a job as well and would only use the card to probably make a once a month purchase just so l could pay it off and build good credit. l have applied for my bank is credit card (compass bank), petsmart is card (where l work), discover is student card, citi student card and other major ones l cannot think of right now. They all reject me. How do you START to build credit when you cannot GET a credit card without a credit history. That makes no since!!! Any suggestions?
American express was another one.
Capital one was another.
Chase was another.

l do have a checking account. l have two, actually, with compass bank and have had it for years. l just recently applied for their credit card and got rejected.
l do not know why it would make a difference if it was a savings or checking.

Open a savings account with a local bank. After you have been with them for a while, ask them about a low balance credit card.

If you are a college student with a job, I'd think you'd be able to get a low limit student or store card. Maybe the problem is that you applied for too many all at the same time. But credit is tight right now, so that might affect it too - wait a few months, then apply for ONE, from a store or a student card.

Well, part of the problem is too many inquiries on your credit report. Every time you apply for a card they put a mark on your report and your credit score will drop because of it. With the credit crisis they are also getting much pickier, and you would need a decent amount of work history.

Well sorry to say in addition to whatever reason credit card companies were denying you--- u now have another strike against u & that is too many inquiries in a short period of time...you now look desperate to creditors since you've applied for so much credit in such a short time.no credit can be just as bad as bad credit..so my suggestion to u is to apply for a secured credit card to establish credit.. l can almost guarantee that u will get approved for this because they r designed for those that r just starting off or rebuilding..Citibank & Capital One have great secured credit card..but almost all banks have them so do some comparison shopping..my first credit card was with Orchard Bank --- so if u have not tried them check them out. l must also warn u that ur first credit card generally has a low limit so do not be shocked if u do not get a credit limit in the thousands..Good Luck & for more reading on how credit works (including inquiries) check out myfico.com they have very informative info regarding understanding how credit works including how creditors view the consumers...there may also be an answer on why u have been getting rejected!
