My upstairs apartment was broken into this afternoon. They got in using a crow bar (apparently)..they stole my tv. l did not put in my 60 day notice to my rent office because l planned on moving into a two bedroom because l am expecting. Whoever broke into my place tried to break into the apartment downstairs from me, but they was not able to get in. A week ago, l saw them break into the neighbor across the sidewalk from me. Our officer that is suppose to be on call NEVER shows up. He just calls and tell us to call the police. This time l called him and he was out of town. They put on the application that we have security, but he is never around. Never walking the area..hell l do not even know what he look like!!! Can l break my lease because l really do not feel comfortable out here especially being 6 months pregnant??
We have deadbolts, but apparently that didnt stop them.

You can if you want but your landlord is still going to charge you all kinds of outrageous fees and stuff.

You can break your lease, but the apartment complex has no obligation to waive any early termination fees if there are any stated in your lease. You can ask them if you can have a different apartment, or maybe install a deadbolt on your doors/windows, but that is probably about all.

Your place being broken into in no way excuses you from honoring your lease. Homes in which the owners live in get broken into too. If you are scared, then break the lease, lose the money and possibly have it affect your credit - but in all honesty, if you REALLY feel for your safety then do it. Nothing is more important than that.

You cite three break-ins in your building..what time frame.matter of weeks? or over an extended period of time.

You could certainly break your lease (and l would!) but have copies of ALL the break-ins and your proof that management has made no effort to improve security.

You may have costs down the road, but valid reasons.

You cannot legally break a lease over this issue, as long as the apartment management provides reasonable security. Locks and deadbolts on doors are considered adequate. Be aware that crime happens anywhere, even if you live in a neighborhood of million dollar plus houses.

When such incidents occur, contact the authorities to report what happened. Meanwhile, l hope you have renter is insurance to cover the cost of your missing TV set.

No u cannot break ur lease. At least not without paying the penalties. If ur apartment complex is penalties for early lease termination r low, u may just want to eat the expense & get on with ur life. If they want to charge u a lot though, u may have to look for an alternative to protect yourself. If there is a history of crime/violence in ur apartment complex, u may have a civil case against the landlord. Check online to find an attorney. If there is a history of safety violations, an attorney may be willing to take the case for free. In either event, it will cost u nothing to consult with an attorney about ur case, & possibly get some free legal advice, even if he/she decides that u do not have a case. Do not do anything that can get u into financial trouble until u check with an attorney.

If the lease states that they will provide security and they don't, then yes, you can terminate your lease.
