l put another lock on ther door?
there is already a lock (the one with those really old looking long metal keys)
i would just feel safer with another lock on there-not one which requires a key but some sort of latch. do you think he would mind-as surely theres no harm in making the place safer? its a wooden door and like l said not a lock with a key just a latch or something read daniel C is answer-thats what im getting at

if you have not asked him then you need to, because he just might, because if he does not have the key, he might think something is going on at your house.

As a landlord l wouldnt mind, however l would hope u would do the curteous thing first & ask. if it is a wooden door then im sur ethere wouldnt be a problem, however if they have put in a pvc double glazed job then they might not be to happy.but ask, worse they can say is no, but if u explain yo udont feel safe then im sure they will let u do it!
edit: l know what u were talking about & dan c is right he cant just walk in, however it is still his property & u need to ask him first. as its a wooden door l am sure he wouldnt complain. l know l wouldnt if it made my tenant feel safer

l don`t think there`s a problem-you`re also securing his property! ask b4 doing-tell him/her why-it`ll be ok i`m sure. you do have to give a key to landlord-fire;hopefully never-firemen need key.

No not at all, if its one that can only be locked when you are in the house that should be fine, its not as though you can lock yourself or them out. l am sure as a landlord he cannot just nip round whenever he wants and walk into the house, he has to arrange with you a suitable time to come and visit (since your paying for the place) so you just simply let him in.

Just ask him, he may want a key from you.

l do not think he would mind if you do two things. Check with him first and provide him a key. He really should install this for you at no expense to you. It is a pretty basic thing to expect from an apartment. Those little latch keys are archaic. l could kick one of those in.
It is against most leases to install a lock without giving the landlord a key. He has to have access to his own property (within reason and notice and all that).

If he is a reasonable man, you should tell him you do not feel safe with that old lock and you'd like a new one. He may even do it himself. If nothing else, he should reimburse you for the cost of it.

He likely wont mind, he might even pay for it if you ask! Mine payed for locks on all our bedrooms, deadbolts AND handles, and a second lock on the outside door. It is your right to have them if you dont feel safe, but you will likely have to give him a key. If you want something WITHOUT a key, get one of those chain locks so it can only be locked when your at home!

l do not think that the landlord should have an issue with it. Are you wanting more safety cause you do not trust the landlord or just an in general thing? If it is nothing against the landlord then ask them, just tell them that you feel slightly uncomfortable and that you'd like to have another latch put on. Reassuring them that you plan on paying for it should help your case.

Those are called skeleton keys and are no longer even legal to have on rentals. Your landlord needs to install a deadbolt lock at his own expense. Keep in mind that a landlord is entitled to have a key.

You r in every right to change locks or put additional ones if u r not safe. You can ask him/her for permission & even have the landlord pay for it. It is his responsibility to keep the premises safe & u should not have to pay out ur own pocket. However, u should give him a copy of the key (he is entitled to it). In case, for instance u get locked out of ur apartment or for maitenance auhtorization when u r not home. etc. He CANNOT use this key as a free pass to go in ur house whenever he/she wants. (It is against the law).

not sure if he would mind or not. the fact is that you would have to ask him first. if he says no, than do not do it, period.

Curtsey demands that you ask for his permission before you change the lock.
