My sister works as a CNA at a nursing home. She started about a month ago. The other day, she was talking to me about an old gentleman at the nursing home who lives up on the fourth floor, which is for patients that need long term care. She told me she was sad because the patients there basically stay there until they die. She met the older gentleman just a few times because he shares a room with one of her patients. She told me that the man sits in a wheel chair all day and he even sleeps there. l asked her why he does not just sleep in his own bed and she says it is because he falls out all the time and the nurses get written up. Now, here is my question. Could not they get a bed with bars protecting the man from falling or something?? l know l can not even sit in a chair for an hour without getting uncomfortable. Is this right?? l asked my sister why the nurses do not just get a bed with bars for him and she said she did not know why. i'm wondering, are there other nursing homes like this too??

For residents at risk for falling, we usually just put a mattress on the floor so if he falls, it wo not be that bad. Sadly, we also have residents who are not at risk for falls, but falls asleep on wheelchairs anyway either because of the meds' side effects or their medical condition or just too tired.
