l need to know if its legal for my apartments to charge two separate late fees. As of the 5th of the month its a 50 dollar fee plus everyday thereafter is 5 dollars a day. Is this really legal? Help l feel as though there robbing me>!!!!!

Was that spelled out in your lease? If so, you agreed to it when you signed the lease.

My lease says the same thing. Only on the 9th it is late and fees accrue after that. As the previous person stated if it is spelled out as such in your rental agreement, then it is perfectly legal.
And they might feel the same way about you. You signed an agreement to pay on time, you're their income. Just a thought.

Why would not it be legal? First of all, the lease is a contract & u agreed to it.

Second, the structure of the late fee makes sense. You're hit with the $50 one to try to encourage u to make ur payments on time (and avoid the $50 fee). Then, the $5 a day fee is to prevent u from sitting back & figuring u can wait until next month to pay.

At least u get a 5 day grace period. Some leases r written so that the late fee kicks in on the second of the month.

My leases say 3rd of the month $50.00 and $10.00 per day there after. Yes it is legal. If you feel this is robbing you, pay your rent on time. Then you do not have to worry about it.

l do not know how every state works but here the max late fee that can be charged is 10%. Apartments either charge the full 10% the 1st day its late or they charge like your landlord does until it hits 10%. The way your landlord does it actually benefits you because instead of getting hit with the full late fee it builds up so you can actually pay less if you pay sooner. l do not see the problem.
