If a flat tax was established, would it replace all taxes?Like local, state and federal?Would a flat tax be on all goods and services? How would it work? l do not live in the US, but l am a citizen... l still have to pay taxes, but l do not see the reason why, I am not using any services from my country, and I am not getting anything, but l still need to report my worldwide income...How does that make sence? If l lived in the states, l could see the point, but l don't. So would a flat tax eliminate this problem?Theoretically, would not this flat tax catch all the people who do not pay taxes, because everything they buy would be taxed?Plus when l come back into the country for visits or travel, l would also be putting money into the pot, as well as every other 'visitor' regardless of where they are from? Thanks for giving me some education on this. But I am still wondering, if we are taxed som much because of bigger government, then should not the bigger government be making progress? As it happens, l only went to a 'government funded' school for three years, and if l recall correctly, my parents paid taxes for that...
l do understand the government assistance in case l needed asylum and all that... and l do travel with an American passport, that l paid for, and l did pay taxes up till l moved and l will continue to pay taxes, but the tax law does not state how much l will be taxed on anythying above 85K... l would just like to know how much it is and what it goes towards since l am not currently using any government programs and the like.

You have confused national sales tax with the concept of flat tax assessment, which would tax all citizens at a specific rate, hopefully lower than the current levels, rather than the sliding rate they r using now. Would not change who got taxed, just how it was calculated. We had this briefly back in the 80's, & it was wonderfully easy to calculate, but the Dems did not like the lack of loopholes, so they bollixed it up. It is the national sales tax that you're thinking of, which has various proponents, for various reasons, & has been touted by many, but not really well explained for those who r not really into tax law. It could obviously be fairly easily abused, but so is income tax. The one point to consider is that, though an equitably applied NST could be a boon, & would naturally moderate its hit on ur income according to how u spend that income, it would only replace the federal income tax; you'd still be stuck with local & state sales taxes, & probably an added burden if the states did not go along with the shift. So, unless it were initiated across the board--local, state & federal--you'd probably be more screwed than u r now. As an aside, the only way to get a break in taxes is to reduce the size of government, & l do not mean the armed forces, but the sundry outdated bureaucracies that weigh down the feds, & all the pork barrel treats that Congress uses to buy re-election. The bigger the government, the more money they both need & want, the bigger the hit on ur wallet. Ditto, the more tax burden when u r voting in those nasty career politicians, who have naturally come to believe that u owe them something, just for their self-declared expertise. Which, if u ask me, is mostly to be seen in hoodwinking & stealing from the American people.

No way to know what a flat tax would be exactly, since it has not been defined, and is not likely to happen. But it would not be likely to replace ALL taxes, since there are separate taxing bodies - for example if it were put in place at a federal level, would not replace state and local taxes.
And no, a flat tax would not help tax people now evading taxes. You are apparently talking about the ''fair tax which is anything BUT fair and is equally unlikely to be enacted.

There is no way a flat, or national, sales tax will ever be passed.
We Americans just do not get it yet, the government is in business to keep government in business & government employees in jobs.
The government rarely, if ever, shrinks & NO WAY will the IRS unions allow this to pass. It would mean too many lost jobs for their division. Not too mention it would allow for greater transparency in government.
And, the people would be absolutely shocked to find out how much of their money goes for tax. Everything we buy, everything we do, is taxed at multiple levels.
Did u know that MILK is taxed at the federal level? Bet not.

Even if u r outside the U.S., u r still using services of the U.S. government. At an absolute minimum, u r probably using a U.S. passport to travel to & from the country where u live. In the unlikely event that the country where u live has a coup or invasion, the U.S. government can assist u in leaving, while that country is own citizens die. If u were educated in a government-funded school in the U.S. & used that education to obtain a job in another country, then ur paycheck is a direct result of the services of the government that u feel should not be entitled to tax that paycheck.
