You can. Go up to the bank and ask to have your account set up so you cannot overdraft.

So rather then taking out money you do not have, you will just get declined. It is a little embarassing, but it is a deterrent from owing the bank money.

You can try to get overdraft protection through your bank, but that can get expensive if you constantly overdraft your account.

The most important thing is to balance your checkbook to the penny, every single day for awhile so you know exactly how much you have in the bank at all times.

Unless you can get a handle on your spending, you should switch to cash.

Yes you can, but you could also change your habit. Check out Debtors Anonymous, or if you do not want to go to a 12-Step program (or they do not have DA where you are) check out the book ''How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt, and Live Prosperously'' by Jerrold Mundis. Your local library should have it.

l work at a credit union & l know that u can not necessarily set up an account to NOT go into the negative. Some options available would be overdraft protection as mentioned where they have a line of credit set up or can transfer money from ur savings to cover something that would overdraft, but there is still a charge for each time that happens. If u go into ur financial institution & complain they r going to ask u about ur check register & when the last time it was balanced. If u do not use a check register they will have no sympathy for you.

If u can not balance a checkbook, that includes ur debit card transactions, u should wait a while until u r ready to take time for that responsibility. Otherwise use a credit card & pay it off monthly if u just want to use plastic.

Get on-line banking. It is fantastic. You can see your balance and your credits and debits anytime.

However, is this really a logical way to handle ur account? Takes a slip of paper & write ur balance down, keep it wrapped around ur debit card. Every time u use it, simply subtract the amount u just paid from the balance. It is just that easy, & u have no more problems!~~
